Hi,
Welcome to Looking Around Boston, a newsletter about art and culture in Boston and beyond. If you aren’t already signed up, you can do that here.
We made it through another week! I hope everyone is able to stay home and take care of themselves. I’ve been posting art to lighten the mood on Instagram and Twitter, so follow me on those channels if you’d like to see. I’m @cordeliadmiller on both platforms.
Speaking social media, today I thought I’d recommend a few other places on the Internet that are serving up good art-related content for you during quarantine. These accounts have been uplifting and distracting me, and I hope they’ll do the same for you.
Instagram:
@tussenkunstenquarantaine: I don’t speak Dutch, but art jokes transcend language! This woman is posting user submissions that recreate famous works of art, with hilarious results. I like one user’s near-perfect recreation of Millais’ Ophelia—in her bathtub.
@mfaboston: Since the museum can’t go ahead with its in-person programming, the MFA is hosting a series of Insta Late Nites via live stream that will include curators, writers, and performers. You can tune in for the first one tonight at 9:30 on Instagram Live.
@beatonna: If you don’t know about Kate Beaton’s art, you should. She is a cartoonist, graphic novelist, and author whose work ranges from absurdly funny to completely moving. You can catch back installments of her webcomic (no longer updated) here. I recommend her literature comics—one of my favorites is pasted below; her full Gatsby series is here.
@bostonglobearts: Throughout this crisis, the Boston Globe team is bringing you arts coverage. From museum closures, to pop culture analysis, to features on local artists, follow them to stay up to date on the changing arts and culture scene.
Okay, that’s all for today. Please suggest accounts for others to follow in the comments, and I hope you have a peaceful weekend.
Cordelia
P.S. Looking for a movie to stream tonight? Check out last week’s issue on 3 movies about art that you can watch tonight (one of them is free!).
